Question A problem with "Scisoft" installation on Ubuntu?

Hello,

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop and
I am trying to install "Scisoft" software.
I have downloaded the tar file but I do not know
how to install it.

It seems only untarring the tar ball is not enough
for installation, since when I untarred it and then
recalled for example "ds9" nothing happened.

Would it be possible for someone to help me in this
matter?

With best regards,
Hassan

It appears to be Redhat-based, in which case you need Redhat (or a derivative thereof) to install.

Scisoft .. .. Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic

Scisoft is created on Fedora 11.
Most Linux's use identical libraries. Are LSB compliant.
So no problem at all with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic ..

Prerequisites :

I) sudo apt-get install \
tcsh libgfortran3 libreadline5 libsdl-image1.2 libsdl-ttf2.0-0 unixodbc
II)
Install libg2c0 + gcc-3.4-base, from Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty :
http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...untu2_i386.deb
http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...untu2_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i \
libg2c0_3.4.6-8ubuntu2_i386.deb gcc-3.4-base_3.4.6-8ubuntu2_i386.deb
.....
.....

.. Installing + using ..

1) cd /
2) sudo tar xvf \
<path-to-directory-with-scisoft.tar.gz>/scisoft-7.4.2.tar.gz
3)
Please read README, INSTALL, README_USERS in /scisoft/
4) Use two commands, when you open a terminal window :
4a) . /scisoft/bin/Setup.bash ( <period> <space> etc.)
4b) Example : ds9
... Or just do : . /scisoft/bin/Setup.bash && ds9

..... .. ..
.....
