ok and here we go :" Select "SiS900/7016 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter support" in the kernel configuration

what the hell is "kernel configuration" where can i find it and what can i do with that??

well, in general, as far as the kernel goes, if you don't know what something is, you don't need to know.

that line refers to compiling a modukle for the ethernet card, which will be called sis900.o if that's what you need, check you've not already got it on the system, e.g.

/lib/modules/2.4.13-6mdk/kernel/drivers/net/sis900.o.gz

it shoudl already be there. is there a particular reason you're trying to use it?

yeah....
well actually i tried to configure an ethernet card which doesnt want
to be "active" as yast2 told me as i tried to configure it for the first time "error has occured:eth0 is not active"

obviously i dind know what to do,and tried to find any stuff on the web until i found a page written by someone who haa had the same probs with sis900 and posted that you should set it as active in the "kernel configuration"
well,i know what the kernel is
but i havent done anything similar before
so pleaz talk in a language i might understand

thx a lof 4 spending your time on my dummy-probs

Hi Kokonut,

Sounds like your machine is not working in the same way as mine, I just posted another question in the installation forum.

YaST says eth0 is active, YaST2 says it isn't. I tried a load of stuff, basically blundering around in the dark, even reinstalling from scratch. Any attempt to use insmod fails although Linux seems to know precisely what hardware is there.

What motherboard and other hardware do you have? Maybe there are some similarities. I'm using the ASUS TSUI-M motherboard, Celeron 1200, ASUS DVD, Yamaha CDR, onboard sound & VGA. Everything else works fine.

Hope someone can help.

hi you!

i have a gericom webboy with a sis630 chipset for all stuff,grafics,sound and ethernet...there is a possibility to get eth0 running,just ignore yast2:))
that means just configure eth0 manually
i first typied
"modprobe DRIVER" to activate the driver
then i configured the basics of the network:
"ifconfig eth0 192.168.22.1 (or what ever) netmask 255.255.255.0 up"
then ifconfig shpuld tell you then eth0 is activated,if not start yast and do exactly the same stuff there (intergrate tnew hardware==> network card or something and then the basic network configuration with ip,device and all stuff ...)
after that linux should regard eth0 as running
i tried that and it works....
if you want to configure ADSL after that you should do it with yast2 in the TEXTMODE,than it works....

hope i could helf you a bit, even if i have no clue why that error occurs ;))
