A newbie jumping from XP to Linux . Help!!!

I am a XP user, but need some adventure in Linux. So I wanna use
//
Fedora Core 5.0, x86, CD With Rescue

Version: 5.0 | Architecture: x86 | Type: Bin only | Media: CD | Discs: 6
//

because I have heard it's the latest (Am I right?).
I am really unknown to Linux, I tried Turbolinux once but failed to operate. I am a dumb fool with an XP spoon feeding in my mind.

So, I want to know what does the terms like CD with rescue, Architecture: x86 , Type: bin only means?

Can you suggest some of the basic processes to run this OS? for a boy like me.

There is no "latest" version of Linux, per se. There are a number of popular Linux distributions which are all equally current.

If you want to get the "latest" version of Linux, try out Ubuntu. I personally don't care for Ubuntu for some reasons, but I can't deny that it's the hottest thing in years. For whatever reasons, Ubuntu is the "in" thing.

start with any of the mainstream free distributions: eg Fedora Core 5, Ubuntu 6.06, OpenSUSE 10.1---and others.

I don't know where you came up with 6 disks for Fedora--most of the distros now let you start with one disk and then get everything else thru the net.

One really quick way to get started is to buy a copy of Linux Format with a CD or DVD included.

When you are just starting, don't worry about latest or best--just pick one and dive in.

Thanx for pulling me out of latest or best cobweb , to both of you. I shall prefer fedora core 5.
