A few questions from a potential user

Hi there

I'm considering dipping my toe in Linux waters, and had a few questions to ask. Some functional, some aesthetic...

1. Is there a desktop graphical interface that is akin in look and feel to either OS X or the upcoming Windows Vista?

2. Can MSN messenger be used on Linux, or something that would enable me to contact my messenger contacts?

3. Can I use my Netgear DG834GT and Netgear USB wireless dongle in order to cnnect to the net (ISP = Tiscali in the UK)

4. Are there many games available for Linux?

Sorry for the sheer noob-ness of these questions, but gotta start somewhere!

  1. You can skin your desktop environment to look like OS X or Vista. There are many themes available at www.kde-look.org and www.gnome-look.org .
  2. Linux has its own IM clients that connect to most IM networks. Kopete and GAIM seem to be the most popular.
  3. It may or may not work. Support for some wireless cards is not always very good.
  4. There are many games available for Linux and you can also play some Windows games in Linux if you install an app called WINE or its close relation, Cedega.

I recommend downloading or copying a live CD and giving Linux a test run before making any big switch. Download a couple different ones, too, because they can differ quite a bit. One might work with your hardware better, while the other might give you a better idea about some of the games that are available.

IF your in the USA you can go to any Barnes' and Noble bookstore and get a 'live' cd in the magazine section.
Also, there is a section on Linux!, where you can buy a full version of 3-4 different distros.Suse was very user friendly for a first time system. Walked me right through an install.
The beauty of linux is that even if you are on dialup, for 15$ US you can buy a magazine with a full dvd install of different systems ;)

or for $0.00 / £0.00 you can go to Ubuntu Shipit or Kubuntu Shipit and get some free cd's :D
(small plug :p)
