the nVidia driver problem explains the screen saver problem. The "matrix" style screen saver that you use is likely an OpenGL version. Without properly working nVidia drivers, you probably don't have OpenGL.
As far as your problems setting up the drivers, you need to be VERY specific. You need to tell us:
1) Graphics Card and Chipset
2) Motherboard chipset
3) EXACTLY what error messages you are getting in attempting to install the drivers.
As for gFTP, I have no idea what you are having problems with. Are you attempting to log in as root,... then access the files as a user??? It sounds like a permissions problem to me. Right click on the files and see who their owner is,... my 1st guess is that it is not the same as the user account that you are trying to use to access them, and you have your system set at a fairly high security level. Remember too, that when the files come across, they come across exactly as they are on the server. If the html files are referencing things that are on the server and you are not connected to it, you will end up with problems.
