A few newbie questions about general packages

I am semi new to linux, I have installed it before and playd with it a bit and what not. Know a few commands and how to move around the file system.

I have an older laptop that I want to install a copy of slackware on( I have it up and running already). But my question is what can I get away with not installing to just conserve some space(small HD)? I know I dont have to install X or any X related stuff becuase im strickly going to be running it in command line mode.

But can I get away with not install Tek or emacs? Is there a post or faq detailing what each package is and what it does?

I am mostly going to be using it to mess around with learning pearl(starting some classes), vi and just general programming.

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot but I figured it was pretty newbish heh ;P Thanks for any help

Yea you can definitely get away with not installing Tetex and the emacs stuff. In fact, I do that every time I install slackware. Not to save space, but just because i never use them.

I would read a book at this point--you have enough knowledge that you will absorb it very quickly. Start with "Linux in a Nutshell" from O'Reilly.
Also, Google---there's various sites out there with list of commands (programs) and what they do.
