A few Mandirva 2006 questions

So I used to have Linux on my machine, took up too much space, so I got rid of it. Now I am diving back in because I wan't to learn it more than I did last time. So I installed mandriva 2006 free version and have a few questions

1. When I start up and press enter on "linux" I get the loading screen then a black screen. If I press enter on the linun non ftb or whatever it said I can log in fine. How do I change this and why does it do that?

2. I remember having a problem with my old sound card, a SB Live 24-bit when I had Linux, but now I have a SB X-Fi Xtreme Music and it wouldn't install the driver either. Can someone tell me how or guide me to a site that has it?

I am going to sleep now so I won't respond till tomorrow afternoon, but all help would be greatly appreciated.

1. Likely the frame buffer driver conflicts with the X video driver. Set the machine to boot in non frame buffer mode. I always tend to do that as I use the nvidia 3D driver...

2. Check the ALSA compatibility for that one...

1. You can change which one is booted by default by going into 'system configuration > boot up' from the menus. This won't fix the problem, but should stop it starting the one that gives you the blank screen by default after 6 seconds. Not sure if that is much help...

Try running the alsaconf command and see if it detects your card. If it does, you're probably more or less set. You can run alsamixer to set card parameters.

Ok, so I ran the command alsaconf and it said command not found. I have heard Mandrake is getting crappier, but it's the only Linux distro (with the exception of Xandros) I have gotten to work on my comp. I ran it as a root, so don't tell me that, I'm not that big of a noob lol.
