9800 pro
ok ive been doing some googleing and reading thorugh a load of foroums about useing the 9800 pro in linux and all ive been able to work out is that im in way over my head. is there anyway of seting up the drivers for the 9800 pro without compiling a kernel. and if so would it have much of an effect. ive tried downloading the ati ones of the website and set them up but they didnt seem to work correctly. also would and nvidia card be much easyier to get working

dunno about the 9800 pro whatever! Presumably its an ATi card.
So yes, it's common that it's easier to get nvidia cards working, than ATi ones. Nvidia have considerably better linux support. Though some have no problems with ATi cards. |
While it's true that nVidia drivers are typically easier to get working, the ATI drivers are getting easier and easier all the time. The important part is to make sure you follow all the instructions carefully.
The best howto I've seen is on RedShirt's website here. In case you're wondering, the biggest problem with the ATI drivers is that they assumed certain features/packages were installed and enabled. Anyways, if you have any more problems, post specifically what problems you have and, where apropriate, the output of glx_gears, fgl_glxgears, and glxinfo. Steve |
thanks for the repley but since posting that i have got the ATI drivers working and since then upgraded to a Nvidia 6800 which is working great just incase anyone else is having the same problems if i remember correctly i used this guide to get them working
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=24557
ps ive just had a few drinks so sorry if there's a few typos |
