802.11g card by Airlink, do i need a driver?
 

yes i am new to linux, Red Hat 9 to be specific. All is well except that i cannot seem to be able to get online simply because Red Hat did not detect my card, so i went in to do it manually. Somewhere i went in to add new wireless connection. It told me to choose a brand name from a list, but there's a problem, MINES NOT LISTED, and there is no option for "other."

What do I do? Do i need a linux driver? i went to the airlink website but cant seem to find any drivers for that matter... plz help!

What chipset is it based on? It is very likely that there is no Linux driver for your wlan card, and one of the main reasons is that there is really no 802.11g standard yet. The linux-wlan project has a list of adapters where the chipset for each adapter is listed, but yours doesn't seem to be there (yet).

One thing you could try, if you are willing to part with some money, is trying the Linuxant driver loader. It uses the Windows driver to get the card going under Linux, but it is not free software.

the chipset for the airlink wireless 802.11g is broadcom.

does that mean someone can tell me how to get the driver onto my comp? if so, please do. i am having the same drama and i don't want to dl the widows-driver thing. :newbie: yes, but i am :study: ing and pretty soon i won't be :eek: or:cry: everytime i try to do sumthin. i swear.

Any luck with it? Im wanting to try the same wireless card with my laptop and fedora.

no luck yet. i'm gonna buy the linuxant driver (linuxant.com, i think) for broadcom-based chipset but my damn kernel isn't updated enough so i can't even tell you how it works. not that i know how to install a new driver yet, either. lol. anyway, with fedora you might have a more uptodate kernel (i have rh9) and so could dowload from linuxant right away. if you do, lemme know how it goes!!

Any results? I have the same card with rh9 and everytime i think to go buy one that is compatible it's too late to do so. Please let us know what your results were with the linuxant driver.

I never found anything that would work so i went out and bought a netgear wireless card. Much better support for linux. I should have spent the extra money in the first place or researched which would work with linux. I haven't checked back on the airlink card since i don't use it anymore??

you could just install a program called Wine to linux

its free and emulates windows inside linux it will allow .exe file to execute with no issues

install it and pop your driver CD in and it should run with no issues.
