Hi peeps, Im a newbie to linux. I bought Red Hat 9 3 days agi installed it on my system (with difficulty) but when i booted it wouldnt work with a resolution higher than 640x480, if i try and go any higher when I pass GRUB my monitor goes blank. PLEASE help someone 640x480 is really ^*&*^ me off now, I cant even see some of my programmes properly.
Please help. P.S. I dont even know where to put commands so can oyu please tell me if i have to use them. Thanks in advance. !!! |
Resolutions for X are defined in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4; edit that file, and locate the section towards the bottom entitled "Modes". Alternatively, you can run xf86config as root.
It's important to make sure you have the right video driver for your hardware, too. Also important, especially in determining available video modes, is the section in XF86Config-4 regarding your monitor. Make sure you have the correct horizontal and vertical refresh rates. You can usually find them in your monitor's manual, or do a google search for your monitor model number. |
xf86Config
Hi, where do I enter this XF86Config in my Root? I'm sorry but I'm
new to this. Thanks for your last post it was helpful. TIA |
/etc/X11/
it should be somewhere in there |
X11?
How do i get into X11/etc... Can you please tell me where to go and what commands to type in to get to that xf86config file? I'm on Red Hat 9. Thanks
|
Open a terminal window. Get root by typing:
su and then the root password. Then run RedHat's config program for X: redhat-config-xfree86 From there, it should be pretty easy. Oh, by the way. That program modifies the XF86Config file. Good luck! Martin |
Terminal?
Hiya Martin. Thanks for your post, but can you please tell me where the terminal window is, as I'm new to this.
Thanks Carl.... |
unsolicited advice from another newbie:
either find some basic rh tutorials online, or buy a red hat book e.g. the red hat 9 linux bible. it'll tell you how to do all the basic stuff so you don't have to waste time on the small things like finding a terminal! i swear i spent the first 3 weeks i had linux reading then typing! ;o) caid ps. in case martin hasn't replied yet, the terminal should have an icon that looks like a computer monitor, or you can get at it from the red hat "start" menu in the bottom left corner. |
Thanks mate...
Its dead confusing at first isnt it :( Thanks again Carl.... |
Are you in X now? There should be an icon somewhere on the task bar (or whatever it's called in X) that looks like a screen with a ">" character on it. At least that's what it looks like in RedHat 8.
Otherwise, try Start > System Tools > Terminal It should open a terminal window. (Think DOS window, if that's more comfortable to you.) Regards Martin |
Thanks Martin...
Regards Carl... |
Tip: if you didn't know. Linux terminals can complete command names and file names for you if you press the <TAB> key. So if you type
redh<TAB>conf<TAB>x<TAB> it should spell out redhat-config-xfree86 for you. If you type redh and then press <TAB> a couple of times, you should see all commands that begin with redhat. Regards Martin |
oh i didnt know that martin
thanks for the tip :) |
Hi again Martin, Ive just tried that, but it brings up the graphics changer i had on before using the GUI, I have set it before to 800x600 but my monitor just goes off. I have been told I need to set something in my files by altering a line or something?
Any suggestions please.. Thanks Carl.... |
TO ALL PEEPS THATS HELPED ME....
I'm SOOOO grateful to those that have helped me, I'm just off to watch a tv program so I will be back when its finished (30 mins i think) Thanks again. P.S. I tried that you suggested but it brought up my GUI graphics changer which i had tried to drop my res to 800x600 before but my monitor went off as soon as I passed GRUB. Any other Ideas please? I'll be back soon Thanks again Carl... |
