64 or 32 bits?
 

which is best for my A64? a 64 or 32 bits installation? I am asking this with regards to compatibilities of drivers etc...

Depending on what you want to do. If you just want to use it for typical desktop stuff, like web browsing, multimedia, etc, go for 32-bit. It's just easier to set up - not as many problems as with 64-bit.

If you need to have a server on that PC, or if you perform lots of heavy calculations (like image and movie rendering) it may be useful to set up a 64-bit machine.

Read the review of Kubuntu on Athlon 64 to see how many problems you will have with a 64-bit machine (and Ubuntu makes it pretty easy anyways!)

Straight answer. 32.

Linux programs themselves typically have no 64 bit issues, being that a majority of programs themselves are open source. But you run into issues if you intend on using windows plugins or reversed engineered drivers. Then in that circumstance windows 64 bit issues transfer over to linux. Ndiswrapper and Flash for example. They become much harder to set up. Moreso, if you are even asking this question, chances are
you will not gain much in the way perceptable performance gain. Firefox won't load any quicker, tux racer will still bend around hills just as quick, and multitasking will still be quite good.

Try searching "debian gnu/linux is awesome" - no documents either, what the heck :)

32 Bit. Far better support, I found some programs ran quicker but it was a complete pain sometimes. I am back using 32 bit because I found 64Bit just wasn't worth it.

Thanks for the advice, I'm struggling in the 32bits already. I won't change for the time being.
