64 bits processing in linux
 

out there we have many AMD64 compatible distribution... but this is my question. i have tryied Suse 9.2 64bitts and im gonna try fedora Core 3 64... and on suse i didnt see anything faster and anything near to it.. just as i was expecting.. (AMD 64 3200+) and i wonder


LINUX AMD64 DISTRIBUTION are REALLY going on 64 bits?, or they are just using some drivers tu run under this procesor, but still on 32 bits? ? ?

I highly doubt anybody would put out a 64 bit distro that doesn't use the full potential of the processor. I don't have one myself, but what would be the point. Any distro will run on one, wether it's 32 or not, just like Windows will install on a 64. But run 32

The trouble is the AMD64's run 32bit OS's and apps very quickly as well, but you are likely to see some increase if the apps are compiled 64bit and make full use of 64 code. Not many apps are really coded to make full use as yet. You could maybe try a PI calculation compiled in 32 bit and 64 bit to get some quantative results... But it won't make games run faster, etc a sthey are 32 bit code anyway.

It's still early days and I'm still using a 32 bit OS with my A64 due to issues with some of the software I run - like cxOffice and win4lin and so forth...
