64 bit Intel distros
I have a Dell 490 Precision with an Intel Xeon processor. I have tried various distros in 32 bit configuration; however, I want to migrate to 64 bit computing. Most 64 bit distros I have seen are tagged to suggest AMD 64.
So my question is: Can these amd64 tagged distros run on my machine? If not, what distros are best suited for my Intel Xeon as 64 bit? Thank You in Advance, Dallon Weathers |

Yes. AMD designed the x86_64 architecture and Intel cloned it. AMD renamed it AMD64 and Intel calls theirs Intel 64 or EM64T. Most distros seem to refer to it as AMD64 rather than the more generic x86-64 or x64.

64 bit intel distro
My processor is a Intel dual core 1800 mhz I had used suse 10.3 32 bit version and now I use suse 10.3 64 bit version both run ok
I still have a live cd vectorlinux 32 bit version it runs fine to I don,t have the impression that 64 bits version runs faster all the best |
thanks to all
i'm going to give some a spin

I may be wrong, but I don't think the Xeon is AMD64 compatible. Debian has an "IA64" release. I don't know whether or not any other distros do.
