3D desktop?

I understand that there's a way to get a 3d desktop running on Ubuntu...If there is how do I get it? is it part of the distro? If not any good stable apps and/or tutorials?...
I've pretty much got my system set up to my liking and a3D desktop would be a great way to finalize it!

Thanx in advance

It is called Compiz, and the applications for it are part of Compiz Fusion. It requires a decent 3D Supported card to run. Here is the wikipedia page...

Thank you..Now is there a tutorial that can guide me

demonbladenet,

You can try this. Or do a couple of Googles for other install / running compiz-Fusion tutorials.

Hope this help.

This link should help you a bit. What documentation are you in need of? Ubuntu does have compiz installed. You just need to install the compizconfig-settings-manager package from the package manager. Search synaptic and install it. You will then have a menu added in System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.

Also, if you don't know what synaptic is, you can use apt-get directly in a terminal (GNOME console):

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Which I think is faster and easier, you still need to enable desktop effects in ubuntu though, good luck.

demonbladenet,

You probably only need to drill down through your menus to enable compiz-Fusion. LOL!

It is easier than you think!

So is there no way to keep the cube rotating until I need a specific window?

linuxlover.chaitanya 04-17-2009 12:54 AM

What do you mean to say by that?

I think he wants the cube to rotate by itself (while computer is idle), until he is ready to use the desktop.
