330 modem startup time

I use... /etc/rc.d/init.d/speedtouch start in a script and it connects to the internet fine.

Trouble is the "start" takes 2 mins to do it. I think it is due to the modems micro code.

Is there a way to make it quicker? then I can have it run at boot up.

I use the Speedtouch 330 modem with Mandrake 10.1 Community, for which the connection only takes about 11 seconds. My connection method seems to be slightly different to yours. I use the method described at http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/Spe...ake/index.html (my connection is PPPoA, using CHAPS). The Mandrake Control Center didn't work for me, so I had to use the lengthy route. My /etc/init.d/dial file is

#!/bin/bash
/usr/sbin/modem_run -k -f /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o
sleep 15
/usr/sbin/pppd call speedtch

I think the && in the example dial file on the website shoudn't be there. The sleep command is required to allow modem_run to finish executing (which takes 11 seconds in my case) before starting pppd, otherwise the connection fails.

Ken,

Thanks very much for your help. That URL was most helpful and it works fine now. I can now have connect at boot up and connect - disconnect the link anytime I want.

Thanks again.

Alan
