32bit Test Server for 64bit Production Server
 

Hi all,

I am setting up a test server for my production server OS - Fedora12 x86_64 (php/mySql), however have a CPU I am wanting to use as a testing server that can only handle 32bit. Ideally I wanted to mirror the production server in every way however due to budget restraints am trying to get away with using the CPU I already have. Am I likely to run into any problems with operating a 32bit testing server for a 64bit production server? in terms of syncing and compatibility etc?

I am assuming the hardware is completely different on each system? That can cause problems, doesn't mean it will, but it can.


That aside you can always install a 32bit OS on the 64bit machine. Then you will have an OS that mirrors your testing server.

Waste of time and money. You can't predict what may happen. If you want to test then get a correct baseline system running.

It may be that common apps would run and that later you can iron out any issues but the whole point of a test it to be correct in every way, otherwise you are wasting time.

Note also that Fedora is RH's bleeding edge R&D distro; definitely not recommended for a server as a complete new version comes out every 13 mths.
If you want RHEL type env but free, go with Centos instead.
