3 lil questions....
question one: having a debate, is GNOME pronounced "ge-nome" or "jee-nome" i personally think its the latter as there are games called Gnotski and stuff like Grip. just curious
question two: can i make redhat 9 boot straight to root, looking thru my bible and i cant see that it says, i set it up so root is the default account and checked the "auto login" box, but no joy. i know most people shouldnt do this, but i want to. question three: having trouble installing the NVIDIA drivers, admittedly i havent read up enough yet, but i will do. just wondered are there any RPMs? (i like them) thanks for your help |
1) I say nome without the G, no clue though.
3) NVIDIA drivers are easy to install, just read the FAQ at the top here... |
1) gnome as in garden gnome like derek had in coronation street
2) if you can convince me it'll do you more good than harm i'll tell you 3) THERES AN FAQ ABOUT THIS AT THE TOP OF THIS FORUM |
1) i say geenome, my friend hates me for that, he thinks its pronounced gunome, i think he's a moron, he punched me, i kicked him....
2) don't ever login in graphical interface to root, it's a big big no no nEvEr Do It!!!! (other than that, i don't know what files control logins, but try going under system tools of system config and select users or something similar, look for an autologin option) 3) rpm's suck, simple as that: yes they are convenient, but no there is none for nvidia drivers; read through the faq at the top of this forum and follow them ExAcTlY and you'll do fine (yes, even if you've already installed them, do it again following exactly the instructions listed) p.s.: do make sure you have the kernel sources and headers installed, you can them from redhat's site (and they should be in rpm form) |
1 - ah yeah gnome as in garden gnome, i remember, lol @ corrie. i prefer to call it "genome" as i played metal gear solid and learnt all about the genome soldiers, lol so to me its G-Nome. :P or nome(silent g) anything other than "gunome"
2 - what exactly is the problem with loading to root? you get asked to be root for so much other shyte. tbh i dont care if it fooks up, good excuse to load SuSE instead and try that out, we learn by our mistakes, not my main pc, windows is on another HDD 3 - aye rpms and all that..... will begin reading more, just want them on, i dont wanna have the confusion. for some obscure reason mozilla has stopped working with flash when i had it working and i havent changed a fuxin thing!!! |
kevs reasons not to be root

One linux book I had said it was pronounced "guh-NOME" but I've always just said gnome (ie nome).
Now, it is very simple to install the NVidia drivers in RH9. The key thing that most people miss is getting to init level 3. Here is what you do: Download the drivers When that is done, press CTRL-ALT-TAB-F1. Now you will prompted for a user name (root) and password (root's password). At the prompt, type: init 3 Then cd to the directory where you downloaded your driver file and type at the prompt: sh NVIDIA-Linux_etc_etc.run The installer should not have any problems. After that is done, use your favourite text editor (ie vi or pine or whatever) and edit the file /etc/X11/XF86Config Make the changes described in NVidia's readme (I think you have to make sure it says somewhere Load GLX and comment out Load GLCORE and load DRI, and also change the reference to nv to nivida. See the readme.) Then, type init 5 You should see the splash screen. -dave |
