2nd/3rd USB ports not visible to Mandrake

I'm brand new to Unix and Mandrake. I have successfully installed Mandrake 9.1 on my Sony VAIO laptop in a dual boot config with Windows XP. I can successfully launch either Windows or Linux.
What I can' NOT do is get a USB mouse to work at all. Here is what I have done.

My keyboard is connected via a USB splitter to the first USB port. It works. A mouse attached to that same splitter does not (i.e. the Mouse configurator fails no matter what I select) and the mouse id not detectable). I was told by Mandrake support to avoid splitters so I have removed the mouse from the splitter and attempted to connect a USB Logitech cordless mouse to the 2nd USB port.

The MouseDrake configurator fails with these messages:

insmod'ing module ehci-hcd failed at usr/bin/perl-install/modules.prn line 409

hint: insmode errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

If I run MouseDrake and configure the glidepoint, that does work.

I have now attempted to connect my keyboard to the 2nd USB port and after rebooting, it does not work either.

I don't know how to diagnose the problem any further. I'm dying to learn Linux but this has me stumped now for over a month. Any help greatly appreciated.

Well, right now, you should install Mandrake 9.2. It has better hardware support. Even though I use Mandrake 10.0, I dont recommend it because it is unstable (sort of).

When i installed Mandrake 9.2 onto my Asus P4PE-X motherboard...only 2 of the 6 usb ports worked...the ones that didn't work were the usb2 ports...since some of my hardware is older...and made just as usb was just coming out...my hp 812c printer and my hp 3300 scanner...i found out with great trouble that the printer and scanner were not upwardly compatible to usb2....so i run them off of the usb1 headers....

could this be your problem?

just a thought
Tom

another thought, if you have USBview installed and if you can get to it, that might tell you somthing. If you have it, for some reason it is in the hardware configureation menu in mandrake.
