2005le - Postfix and Host Names

Mandriva 2005

Hi There - Looking thru my 'syslog' I find the following repeated over and over -

___________________________________________________________________________________
"Jul 29 10:11:30 localhost postfix/postqueue[6809]: warning: My hostname localhost is not a fully qualified name - set myhostname or mydomain in /etc/postfix/main.cf"
____________________________________________________________________________________

I guess I should add a name to /etc/postfix/main.cf - can I do this with 'KWrite', if so what name would it be. Is it my email address or /home/myname

As a 'Newbie' any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for looking hope you can help.

Do you own a domain name? In that case it would be something like "machinename.mydomain.com". If not, you can just just make something up, say, server.example.com

I don't know KWrite, but if you can open main.cf (it should be in /etc/postfix I would think), there is a parameter in the call myhostname that you can set.

If you have webmin installed, you could use that.

If you set the hostname for your machine, Postfix will pick that up too. I don't know where you do that in Mandrake, but it's probably network settings somewhere.

Don't forget, you'll need to do a

# postfix reload

for the changes to take effect

Many thanks for your reply. I don't own a domain name so I will count that answer out, shall have another look in postfix and try to work something out there. Thanks again for you help - Good Luck

Edit - Managed to sort the problem, I went to Mandrake Config section, under Network Settings - misc settings. Found the section which asks for 'Hosts' and added my machine name.
Expect it could be done via the console, but found this way easier and quicker.

Once again, thanks for your help billymayday.
