Try to change the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer. Do the following:

chmod 755 /dev/dsp
chmod 755 /dev/mixer

I am getting the same error message about the sound driver:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
...

I issued the chmod 755 dsp* as mentioned in this thread and the file permissions were changed within this session. But, when i logout and login, the file permissions are set back to the original settings (crw------- for all dsp and mixer files). I guess because of these file permissions, I end up seeing the same error message about the sound driver. Is there any way to change the file permissions permanently?
