2 HUGE issues unsolved for me plz help
 

ok im still having troubles doing alot of things.

i still cant network,, meaning get on the internet.,. everything IS correct and i say that with force ITS CORRECT whether i use DHCP or static, its tcpip its the same evrywhere.
i can go to my router set up by using the ususal 192.168.x.x ip addy but i cant get on the net,, everything just sits there and looks at me.
ive tried many different things,
look at this see what you think.
ip addy - 192.168.2.2
host name - 192.168.2.1 (because my router is the host)
dns - 192.168.2.1 - (cuz my router is the dns server)
gateway - 192.168.2.1 - cuz my router is the gateway
subnet or whatever they call it in linux - 255.255.255.0
its an intel 10/100/1000 ethernet chip. onboard. and it worked 1 time on a different install that went bad,, it worked and i have the identicle settings and now it wont work on a different install.
is there a way to force 100mbit full duplex ?
is it possible my router doesnt like what linux is telling it ?

this is the identicle way windows uses tcp/ip also. there is no difference.
the other possibility is under the network card config its not showing the card specific settings like 10/100mps or duplex or anything. so i can see if linux dont know what the cards settings are it wont know what to do.
and i have NO clue how to type in the settings. there are no tips or anything.
under the network monitor it shows it as being connected and running. ive stopped it and started it and deleted it and remade it and still nothing.

i cant make a boot floppy
whether i try to make it during linux install or after it wont work says there isnt enough room on the floppy. well wtf am i suppose to use then ?
i made one ONE time and never again after that. is there a way i can hex edit or text edit a file on that floppy to show where the linux install is ?
i just dont understand why it wont make an install floppy

i still cant get the graphics to run in hardware mode. ATI 9700 pro.
i even installed new driver and followed the ati instructions and did the config thing in the konsole. and all the did was fuck up my display now im in 640x480 and shit is huge and alot of the display is off screen. and i cant go any higher than 640x480. its really pissing me off.
if all linux is good for is a work station then i dont need it. i thought linux was suppose to be good for graphics and gaming.
so how can i make my 9700 pro run in full hardware accelerated mode in 8x or 4x agp ?


im a total newb fellas so if you must get technical please walk me thru the steps, and again so for being a total pest and asking so many questions.

ip addy - 192.168.2.2
host name - 192.168.2.1 (because my router is the host)
dns - 192.168.2.1 - (cuz my router is the dns server)

ok dude, youve def got at least a few things wrong:

hostname: this is a unique ascii (text) name used to indentify your computer on a network... it should not be an ip address, and this is never your router. try simply adding a simple name like "bob", or "homepc1" or some sht.

DNS: this is an internet server that provides translations between hostnames that you type into your browser (like www.linuxquestions.org) and the actual IP address of the internet server. THIS VALUE WILL TYPICALLY BE GIVEN TO YOU BY YOUR ISP AND IS MOST CERTAINLY NOT YOUR ROUTER.

gateway - looks right, granted that your router has connectivity to the internet.

All these instructions/descriptions should be outlined in your router manual. read it over again.

as far as setting these values in linux, what distro are you using?

re the boot floppy.... you are going to have to give more descriptive explanations... saying "It doesnt work" does not provide any information to help you troubleshoot.... what utility are you using to create the floppy?
have you formated the disk? it sounds like the disk already has files on it, or is write protected...

On your network, can you start samba?? See any other computers?
What distro are you using? What type of router?
Try DHCP again and change host name to localhost.localdomain (thats usually default.)

uhm where to start ,, ok let me start here.

ive posted 2 times in my other threads that when updating mandrake 9.2 after it downloads and installs it totally kills mandrake,, kde and gnome... and i just did it again,, omg guys you have no idea how mad this is making me,, i run mandrake update and i dont even grab a bunch of stuff,, i grab the gaim update and some kde stuff and thats it mostly bug fixes and normal updates. and now im back to shit. it turns my K menu or start menus into nothing,, its a text based menu that shows only a few app's and none of them are the regular ones i or we use. omg im so gunna kill mandrake.

ok i reloaded prior to the update and the netowrking is running fine as it should,. but this has happened on one other occasion to. i install and networking is fine. well what about next time or the next. jesus...

boot floppy.. when i make a boot floppy in linux it says there isnt enough space on the floppy WHAT!@!!??? ok whatever linux not enough space.,,, i even reformatted the floppy on my windows machine. i tried in linux but i dont knwo the format command..
when i try when im installing linix it just says mkbtfloppy failed... and thats all..

i wish i didnt have to go to workk right now because i have to reload again cuz of that damn mandrake update. and i can almost guarentee you that this install will not be the same,, each time it never is the same something doesnt work ... aarrrgggg!!!!!

V....You can set your dns to your routers gateway. That's an easy way to ask it to pass it's dns discovery to you as long as your router is set with real DNS server values, like for instance 151.164.1.8 (Richardson dns server for SBC).

What you have issues with that I can see is:

1. What is the state of DHCP...Is your NIC set to "request and generate"? Is your router setup and functioning with DHCP on? Is NAT turned on? If NAT's on then u can hit the gui in a web browser with 192.168.2.1. If the PC gives you an IP and you don't have to hard code it, DHCP is working.

2. Don't force your NIC to do 100/full duplex. Set it to auto. Some companies do not broadcast in full duplex and setting it there will only shut it down. I guess in this case it would be up to your router, but it's still a bad idea to force it.

Try setting your PC with a "hardcoded" IP like 192.168.2.150 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). If your router is working and just not doing its job as a DHCP server, this will tell it you dont give a crap about it's hand outs, you know what you want, and you're ready to roll.

My next question would be: Is your router setup with the correct pppoe or static settings?

my hardware pc and router both work fantastic undser windows using either dhcp from the router or a static ip. i use a static ip since some of the things i do seem to handle static ip's better but i have tried dhcp with linux.

im about ready to reload again but i think i may have ound out what was causing this network trouble.
as per my last post i had reloaded fresh mandrake 9.2 and the networking was working great as it should. but the only thing i did differently was the Host Name. i was putting in 192.168.2.1 (my router ) since i thought the router ip would be the host.
but it seems as if i leave it blank it seems to work fine.
also the dns server which whether its static or dhcp is 192.168.2.1 my router. but for some reason linux keeps changing it to 127.0.0.1 why it changes it to the tcp/ip core ip i have no idea it thinks the poc is the dns server but its not its my router.
so i will reload again and set it with no host name. and see what happens.

also a big pain for me is the mandrake update.
does anyone have aNY clue as to why its killing linux ?? possibly i am downloading something that isnt already on my machine thus installing the rpm is causing linux to go nuts ? or is it possible that its reading my mandrake 9.2 wrong and giving me a list of wrong updates or updates that are too old ?

all i REALLY want is GAIM update so i can use MSN thats all really but since i saw security and bug fixe3s i thought it be wise to get them too,, also KDE and GNome bug fixes, i went thru and read each fix to see if it applied to me i only grabbed the ones i figured applied to me, and she still killed my linux.

im going to barnes and nobel tonight or tommorrow and grab a linux noobies book too i really need something i can refernce when you fine gents arent around to help my sorry arse.


anyone have any clue about the boot floppy? why it says not enough space ? one of the files is 1.3 megs and the other is only a couple of Kb.. so i dont know what its doing but ggrrr its frustrating.


also after the update i loose my logon GUI im back to the terminal log on. and the only thing i can log into is KDE... i type Gnome but it says its wrong,, what is the terminal command ofr gnome ?

You are not understanding what is router and how it works. A router is used to hook your network called LAN to another network called WAN. A router is designed to balance out the network load or handle WAN and LAN requests. When router is setup like a gateway to access the internet, it needs a few DNS (Domain Naming Service) IP addresses, an IP address to connect to your ISP, and maybe a hostname. The DNS are servers that your ISP uses to translate word or phrase for example the site "google.com". The DNS servers will look up google.com and sends the IP address which is 216.239.37.99 to your computer. Then the web browser access the site with the IP address.

Linux libraries depend on other libraries, so it makes it hard to update even with rpm files. When you updated the libraries that you installed depend on other libraries that did not get installed. Go into KDE and remove all gnome files. Then install them. This may correct your problem.

Boot floopies can hold up to 1.44 but the creative LINUX minds found a way to increase the storage to 1.7 with out special software to download. I do not know what filesystem that you are using but XFS takes a lot of space. You can try /usr/bin/fdformat to do a low level format of high capacity formats. They are listed under /dev as anything that matches fd*.

I think you found a bug in LINUX when you entered the IP address as the hostname.

If you want to know if LINUX has setup your network setting correctly type "/sbin/ifconfig". If do not know how to use a certain program, type man progsname. It will show you a text help explaining about how to use the program.

i know exactly what a router is and what it does and it works fine with the SAME settings in windows.

the router works and works fine its not the router its the way linux wants you to set up your network.
and mind you ther eis internet acces and LAN ..

ok so i installed redhat 9 and god damn it it has drivers for my intel pro 1000 adapter which can run 10/100/1000 but redhat wont use it.
i dont like the way it has irq i/o dma i have no idea what settings to use so i try the 3 intel drivers and none of them work, so now i have no idea how to get drivers nor how to install them

and redhat runs WAY faster,, man what a difference. i like redhat better.
but i cant get on the net ggrrr.
also need to grab kernel updates and such.

ok so now for the search of the century searching for stuff i have no idea how to use. woohoo let the party begin.

i like red hat better its handling my system alot better.... oh hell i forgot i need cmedia AC97 drivers for sound.
oh and btw the ati 9700 pro is still running ALL games in siftware mode ther eis no way in hell hardware acceleration is on,, even though i have it set on in the redhat install.. is there any way to test hardware accel or actually turn the thing on i cant do anyting cuz all graphics(games) are running like 5 fps.

i know i want the bigmem cuz im using a gig of ram correct ?? but what else there should i grab ?
also notice im using i686 that is because according the mandrake 9.2 that is the kernel it uses.
i have an intel 3.0ghz HT MSI 865 PE NEO2 FIS2R mobo.


i also grabbed the intel network drivers from intell and followed the installer to a T including the "make install" command but it said cant find kernel xxxxx so i assume its simply because i dont have or rather need to update my kernel. so i grabbed regular and bigmem kernels along with some other rpms ill install and see what happens. if i cant get it to work ill probably go back to mandrake 9.2 and NOT update anything. but i sure wish to hell i could get my video card to run properly, thats crazy that nothing runs right from the video card.

ok mandrake is up and running nice and smooth right now. man i would like to update stuff but not if all its going to do is kill linux thats bullshit if you ask me,, i mean really why would updating kill linux. its not useless but it is for someone like me and many others..

You do not have to upgrade library files if the programs that you are installing does not need the upgrade versions. Winodws has brain washed you in to thinking that you have to upgrade as soon as possible. In Linux you do not have to upgrade if the program that you are installing works properly with libraries that you have installed. The only time when you upgrade is the program that you are installing depends on a newer library. Before compiling programs or compiling modules (drivers) you need a copy of your original kernel. Mandrake and Redhat has the kernel on the CDs, so you just need to run an rpm installing program and install them. It will place them in /usr/src. The directory linux needs to be also in there too because programs and modules usually use /usr/src/linux to look up the kernel source code to compile. The directory linux should point to the linux kernel so you just need to make it a link directory. Look up "ln" in the man pages. If you do not know what kernel version you are using, at the console type cat /proc/version or uname -r.

For your graphics card, its a little harder because ATI rarely follows LINUX. You can try drivers from ATI and see if they work. If not, try gatos drivers. If gatos drivers do not work, try dri drivers. If they do not work try Schneider Digital drivers. One of these drivers will work or will work the same as other driver third parties. I suggest with all this testing with different drivers that you set your AGP in the BIOS to 2X or 1X. The link below may help you.

The sound card that you have is supported in LINUX. Well cmedia AC97 is not what you are looking for because your intel chipset handles the sound. Go to http://www.alsa-project.org and download everything you see there. Then follow directions for intel i8xx chipsets in the sound card section. If you see ; in the directions for compiling alsa, use && instead. When using ; to seperate different commands, it ignores any errors and goes to the next command. If the first command such as make has errors, make install will not work. After installing and setting up alsa, go into Mandrake's control center and make sure alsa is selected to load at boot. Next reboot the computer. After rebooting load up kmix or alsamixer and change the volume settings. Then save the settings as defaults. If you are using alsamixer run "alsactl store". This will save your volume settings next time you boot.

ok the cmedia didnt work in redhat it works fine in mandrake 9.2
and video dont work worth a poo in either.

i tryed to update the kernel in redhat but for some reason it wouldnt even open the RPM or at least it never showed anything, so i swithed back to mandrakle 9.2 which is running smooth, and i verified again the network problem was the hostname problem,, so now i just leave it blank and make the rest my normal ip subnet and 192.168.2.1 router ip. and she is smooth ans silk for networking,, Lisa even works and i can see my other machine just fine.
ftp to my xbox works fine also. ;)

i would think that with the kernel that was just released the other day that i should upgrade the kernel, yes ? since its the kernel and not simply a program update.

i was reading a bit about kernel upgrades and i was like omg i have to go thru ALL that just to run an installer or patch sheesh cant they make anything automatic in linux. if you want to use terminal arguments/commands that should be an option if you want it shouldnt have to be manditory.

You still have a lot to learn in computers. You do not just upgrade because of the hell of it. You upgrade only if a certain program or hardware will work in the newer version that it didn't work in previous version.

Do not patch kernel that came from distributions. Only patch kernels from kernel.org.

yeah well it is broke obviously when certain hardwares arent recognised when video/graphics run at 5 fps MAX when sounds are screwed up cuz of a bad driver, on and on typical linux ,,

im going back to windows,, ill keep a small drive i have with linux on it but im not giving linux anymore attention.. ive wasted too much time already for an os that REQUIRES that you to do all that you need to do.
sure if i had older hardware it would probably run fine but then again it probably might not who knows....

i install windows it runs i can install drivers and the hardware works i can update windows and it dont cause my windows to become useless.

linux isnt for me i knew that when i went into this but i wanted to learn but not when i have to program the os myself screw that, mandrake 9.2 was releases what 2 months ago and STILLLLLL you can not load the OS and have hardware accelerated video/graphics,, so boys you can click hardware acceleration under xfree all day and night but its not hardware acceleration.
im a hardware person i always have been i know hardware,,,, and i know windows,, i dont neeed to learn how to program just to run an os,
its got a long way to go ill give it another year or 2 before i try linux again but i hope by then its actually an os that can be used for more than hackers and scripters and servers. (and seeing the way mandrake and redhat BOTH hadnle memory management i cant see for one second how anyone would use it for a server os. that os is a memory hog and isnt handling memory very well. i dont like to hear my PC bog down when im opening stuff. and linux does it hardcore.

oh well,, i tried it,, it didnt work for me. and more than likely never will.
