2.6.8 Kernel and sound
 

Hello. I installed debian 3.1 sarge about a week and a half ago. I got the nvidia drivers installed and the kde desktop going on a toshiba satellite. My Problem is with sound. I've installed alsa + base + utils+ mixer. I've run alsaconf about 4 times now. Linux sees my onboards sound ( Intel and the 'driver' is ac97 )and says how many channels it does, and i've unmuted the volume in the mixer, and I've enabled sound in kde. Still no sound. I've tried playing a mp3 in juk and it plays, but no sound. When I play with the mixer, the speaker gives some static when I turn the volume up all the way. I've read some reports that it has to do with the 2.6.x kernel and alsa. Some have said that alsa in built in to 2.6.x, others say I need to recompile the kernel with 'soundcore'. I tried my hardware with a 2.4 kernel based 'live CD' that was based on Debian, and was able to play mp3s with sound just fine. I did the "LSPCI |Grep audio" in the CLI with both the live CD and my new installation and got the same hardware result. any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. A link to a good kernel recompile tutorial would be appreciated.

Try to play an MP3 in a shell (outside KDE) using "mpg321", does that work?
