2.6.7 kernel:Things to install

I have installed redhat linux release 9.0 and the inbuilt kernel is: 2.4.20-8. Would like to have latest stable kernel 2.6.7 and downloaded the source linux-2.6.7.tar.bz2 and the patch patch-2.6.7.bz2.

What is this patch, shall I need to install the patch first and recompile the kernel?
Is this having inbuilt ALSA drivers support? or I need to install any patch for this?
In general should we need to install the patches first and compile the kernel?

Somebody please clarify my doubts.

kernel-2.6.7 is the kernel and patch-2.6.7 is a patch to apply to kernel-2.6.6 to get 2.6.7. If you have kernel-2.6.7, then you don't need the patch.
