1st update today,kernel update won,t allow reboot thanks to timeshift able to bring up previous day
 

i know i need to update but after trying to reconfigure boot sequence i just settled on timeshifts previous days installation without update kernel,this has taken up most of my day,switched from win10 to linuxmint 19.2 a couple of days ago and am new to nomenclature,system worked beautifully while i concentrated on learning curve until kernel update,boot sequence seems to be off not quite sure since there is no troubleshooting mechanism in os.please,would appreciate any help

ok,just to put things into perspective 10hrs of time already spent trying to fix problem, however, my poorly described problem is simple, i updated kernel update,installed,rebooted and reboot failed,attempted different rebooting ie,with dell 3558 rebooting has a couple of bootup procedures,1)secured boot2)not secure boot,both of which involve different setting of legacy or uief.every permiatation my simple mind attempted failed,i was able to reboot but pointer on touchpad was frozen,same with mouse,i have a touchscreen on this laptop and was able to get to timeshift and return to previous day,thankfully,so,thats it,i,m sure update important so how do i go forward without hurting your feelings?

ps,thanks for reply,i wasn,t expecting any ones response but thought it worth a try,so thanks, i,m 66yrs and always thought to keep my mind active i have to attempt new experiences,a novel idea,but not that practical,but i,m determined to put this linux mint os into a working system,such as just installing my local library ebooks into my laptop is complicated,let alone my bank,gas payments,electric payments,social security,doctors,etc the list goes on,this ain,t win10 but i know anything has to be better than being a slave to microsoft,ok,enough of my diatribe.

I've read your post #1 a couple of times now, and I cannot follow what you are trying to say in it. It sounds like someone talking really fast, and way to fast for one to understand the nature of your problem. So aside from the fact that you barely waited even just a couple of hours (and therefore knocking your thread off of the zero reply list - therefore it won't get automatically bumped because it then had replies) for someone who might be able to help; if people reading your problem description cannot understand what you're saying, then it's pretty unlikely anyone can help.

I'd suggest you take the time to both understand your problem, and take the time to describe the nature of your problem, along with the relevant details. Rather than "writing in a rush", and rushing your question - as it's easy to give a bad problem description when you rush your question. It's the same when people rush their replies to questions here, as they might be able to really help but end messing up their reply - rather than taking the time to compose a clear and concise reply that is understandable by the reader(s).

So perhaps in this case maybe the following would have helped: "I've installed Linux Mint and while it was working fine; I then updated it, and the system gives a black screen when I restart the system. Can someone help me with diagnosing the problem. Thanks for any help"

To which, someone might have said:

"Can you try pressing ESC when you see the black screen, then can you look for any error messages. Can you also boot from a live system and copy the system logs from /var/log like boot.log and post them here using CODE tags."

1. No one is obligated to do anything for you. You aren't entitled to anything just because you were born. People on this forum are not obligated to jump on your question in the next 5 minutes.

2. Your post are almost unintelligible the way they are run together. As some other member said. How about some Capitalization so we can tell where sentences start/end.

3. You may have to wait until someone who knows the answer to your question is good enough to come by and give you the benefit of his/her knowledge for free. Just because we like to propagate open source software, and think that it works good.


You are trying to update Linux mint 19.2?
How did you do that? What commands did you use? What was the errors that you got? Are you trying to update the whole box or just the kernel? Did you build the kernel yourself or did you install it from your distos repository?

How about starting over. This time with a little bit of info on what you have done and what did not work, errors, kernel panics, etc.

Been here for years, best Linux site on the web. Take a breath, start over.
