1st install SUSE9.1 Pro can't boot
 

Not won't but just can't. everything seemed to install fine in existing free space to create duel boot. Upon rebooting I selected linux over windows to boot from. It then showed me a black screen with a few lines of code and a prompt. I don't know what to do with this I have only ever used windows. I then tried to reboot from install disk which eventually brought me to a screen asking for username and password. Funny thing about this is none were ever established in the first place so how can it be asking me for a username and password. It won't let me in. I will take any help I can get.

As for hardware:
Intel D850MV mobo
Intel 2.0 G Pentium
2- 80 GB HD's
DVD-rom & CD-RW
Comcast Cable internet W/ Motorola 5120 surfboard

Might be easiest to mark that as a learner and do a re-install. Don't forget to make a user with password. You need to give a root password also.

I found that when it showed me the lines of code with a prompt it won't let me type anything. I put in the install disk (#1) to try to "repair" the installation. It found a problem with bootloader (GRUB). It says it repaired it but it still didn't work. I went back to the same place and had it "Start from scratch." That didn't work either. I started to go for new install and the option it gave me for drivespace made it look like it wanted to write over the rest of my harddrive rather than over the existing partitioned space for Linux. If I have to re-install this how can I make sure that's what it does and not over-write my existing windows partition?

suse won't overwrite any other os(unless you tell them to), they will find your existing linux system and install upon it.

try re-installing it but with LILO bootloader at the installation settings not GRUB.

What documentation are you referring to for installing this one?

Finally got it up and running though I am having trouble setting up printer and cable modem. I did find how to change the boot loader to LILO. The modem is connected through USB which appears to be in proper working order. The cable modem is recognized as the Motorola 5120 surfboard that it is in the hardware list. The same with the printer. During configuration the OS gave me oportunity to print a test page. It didn't print. I had it reconfigure and tried to print again but it didn't. I can get to that later. More interested in getting the internet going right now. I'll be trying to find the answer in the manual but I will appreciate any help. Thank you.

What is the make and the model of the printer?

Is it a USB Printer?

It is an Epson Stylus 740. Yes, it is USB.

OK, i'll see if that works for the printer issue but I still can't get it to connect to the internet. At this point it seems the motorola surfboard 5120 doesn't have an installed driver. I can't figure out how to check. The system seems to recognize it just fine though when I try to configure the system wants to call it a dial up modem. I did check a box someplace that I had a direct internet connection.

I believe I have inputted all the necessary IP addresses and such. When I open Konquerer and direct it to a website it does its thing but there is no modem activity. The modem is connected via USB. I have tried reading the help pages but can't find anything that relates to the situation--also hard to understand much of what I'm reading as this IS the first experience in trying to learn. Just reading doesn't get me anywhere anyway. I need hands on with somebody to get me pointed in the right direction.

I'll start a new thread in the networking section.

Problems are discussed, while methods of doing a certain thing are documented.
