12.10 upgrade problems

Hi
I have just done an automated update from ubuntu 10.4 which has run hassle free for years to the new 12.01 and now I have some files etc lost and others that I can't access.
Of particular concern is the evolution email account along with all my history.
Most files have been copied over but this seems to have been lost and others will not activate at all.
Can anybody throw any lifelines my way?
Sensible thing would have been to backup first but aas I understood it existing files would all be copied across and in most cases it is fine-photos etc.
Anything that helps would be great.

The thread below may help...

If you happen to have a dual boot installation there is an option in grub to load the earlier version of linux. Or there is mention of an 'unfold' option (not familiar with it)

Welcome to the forums!

Can you clarify a couple of points for us?

1. There is no Ubuntu release called "12.01" so do you mean 12.04 or 12.10?
2. What method did you use to upgrade? (If your answer to #1 was "12.10" know that an upgrade directly from 10.04 to 12.10 is unsupported.)

Hopefully you made a backup your data before starting the irreversible upgrade process but if not your Evolution files are all stored in ~/.local/share/evolution I believe; probably a good idea to make a backup of that folder now, then you can proceed with the process of trying to import them into the new Evolution (since you are now using 2 years newer Evolution a few things might have changed).

Not enough is done by Ubuntu to make this perfectly clear. I don't know how many times I said to someone you did not install Ubuntu 10.1 or 10.4 (or similar statement).

Only via the CLI and it is way to big a gap to even consider trying anyway.

Hopefully they installed it with a seperate /home partition that way even though a back up is always a good idea it isn't a critical need.
