10.1 - cdrom noplay cd's

Anyone help on these 2 questions please -

1) All sound onboard my pc work fine (kaffiene is excellent) but when I try to play a cd from the cdrom I get no sound from it. I have installed via control center the following hoping it would help solve the problem.

cdp-0.3.3-16 mdk

cdparanoia-IIIa9.8-9 mdk

Can you advise me please if this is the correct way to go.

2) In the control center > permissions> - could anyone tell me where I can find out what they all mean.

Sorry if these questions sound stupid but any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Can you play cd's as root. If not then you probably don't have the cable connecting the cdrom with the soundcard, and you need digital playback.
You can do that with xmms. Open xmms , press CTRL+P and in the input plugins configure CD player.
Use digital audio extraction as a playmode and configure the paths, for your CDrom (the device, something like /dev/cdrom and the directory :the mount point, something like /mnt/cdrom). The next time you insert a cdrom, browse using xmms "File+" button to the mount point and you should see virtual track files like in windows. Try to play those.

Hope it helps

Obvious question, but just in case: have you got the CD volume turned up? Run aumix and check...
