This isn't an answer to any of your 5 questions, but if you guys are interested in switching from Gnome to KDE or whatever desktop you like, just use the switchdesk command like this:

switchdesk KDE

That will change your default desktop. It works for almost all the desktops except for 1 or 2 of the more exotic ones.

Wow. Quite a few responses since I left yesterday.

I don't do alot of work with images, but it might be worth checking out the dev version of the Gimp. Thanks contrasutra.

Capt_Caveman, I'll have to add that to my ever-growing list of commands that are good to know, but I probably won't use everyday!
