'partition table unreadable' on redhat 7.2 install

Hi all:

was wondering if someone could help...I am attempting to install redhat for the first time into some unpartitioned free space on my harddrive (alongside win2k, which is already installed), using the gui installation interface. When I make a selection and hit 'next' in the section on choosing a method of partition (manual, disk druid, fdisk), a popup screen tells me that my partition table on '/tmp/hda' is inconsistent...when I try to ignore this comment and continue, it then tells me that the partition table on device hda is unreadable and that I must initialize the drive (which I don't want to do).

What are the possible reasons this is happening?

this is my current setup:
60 gb ibm deskstar drive--
20 gb primary dos fat32 partition for win2k;
25 gb extended dos fat32 partition containing 15gb and 10 gb logical partitions;
the remainder (10gb) is unpartitioned free space, to be used for linux.

Thanks,

wayno

Question Same problem does'nt anyone know

I've got the same problem, but I've got a second 20GB MAxtor HD that is completely free for me to initialize, so I select [ignore] and then I get the warning hdf is unreadable, to create a new partition it must be initialized [Yes] go ahead initialize it (I choose) but another error happens:

-----Exception Error
An unhandled exception has occured bla bla bla.......

So I posted a thread for this one which will probably fix your prolem to, if anyone will answer it?????

:smash:

Here's what I had to do when I had this problem.

1) Updated my Mobo BIOS.

2) Boot into the BIOS and get the hard disk geometry and write it down. (Cyl, Heads, Sectors)

3) Boot off the RH 7.2 cd and at the prompt, enter "linux hda=790,255,63" (without the quotes). The numbers are for the cylinders, heads, and sectors respectively.

4) I used disk druid to do the partitioning when it got to that point.

You should be good to go. Hope this helps.
