I entered here because of the Title of this forum is for members that are new to Linux.
Just starting out and have a question? If it is not in the man pages or the how-to's this is the place!

I can not get anything after [root@localhostroot]# I don't know what to type next. I read the book Red Hat Unleash 9.0 and I did not find anything related with this particular part.

If any body can help me with this, that will be great.

I will apreciate if some one who had this problem before and solved it can tell me how to do it. Thank you .,

hmm im kind of a newb myself, but try starting the x window system with startx or xinit(then startkde)

Before doing that I'd recommend typing "useradd" or "adduser", follow the next few steps in creating a user, log out, then log back in as that new user.

Being root is helpful for many things, but it's much safer to simply become a superuser (type "su", then type root password) when a situation calls for root power.

hmm, the Red Hat book had nothing about the console and working from the console?

I tried startx and nothing happened
I tried typing "xinit just like you said tombomb300 and this is what I got.

server is already active for display 0 if this server is no longer running remove /tmp/x0-lock and start again.

Hi, i'm a newb too, can you try hitting the keys Ctrl - Alt - F7 (all three buttons together) . If nothing happens, log in as root, type "init 5" and see what happens. Hope all goes well. Cheers

I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F7 and the monitors when Off so I pressed Ctrl +Alt+F1 and I got back to [root@localhostroot]# I am going crazy with this I really want to get into the Desktop. I have tried everything. I tried " init 5" and nothing happend.
