Unhappy [Fedora 15] em1 has disappeared after system update

Hello everybody.

I have installed Fedora 15 and run it as server on standard desktop PC. It worked fine until I performed yum upgrade several days ago. After updates it continued working normally but after reboot it fails to recognize ethernet adapter. Previous kernel was 2.6.40.4-5.fc15.i686.PAE, new is 2.6.0.40.6-0.fc15.i686.PAE

I thought it was a kernel problem, booted back to 2.6.0.40.4-5 but the problem persists.

NetworkManager is removed from the system (first thing I did when installed sderver) and ifcfg scripts manually configured.

Removed them from network-scripts directory and tried to add device by 'system-config-network'. It shows blank list

Code:
 #lspci | grep -i ethernet
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 19)

#modprobe -l | grep -i marvell
kernel/drivers/ata/pata_marvell.ko
kernel/drivers/net/phy/marvell.ko
Same thing happens when I disable onboard NIC and install one on PCI. lspci detects new NIC, but `system-config-network` fails to see it.

Does anybody know why is it happening? Thanks.

Could you please post the output of 'grep eth /var/log/messages' ?

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth: Device em1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization.

The strange thing is, that I went to /sys/class/net and along my loopback and gre interfaces I found p2p1 instead of em1 ....
Afaik new naming system calls p[n]p[n] network adapters installed on pci slots. My NIC is integrated/embedded. Strangely after update it is recognized as pci device. Nevertheless renaming ifcfg-em1 to ifcfg-p2p1 did the deal. It also appeared at system-config-network. After reboot it also works.

That seems like a fairly major change, I wouldn't have expected it... have to see if my em1 disappears

I have same problem.

Supposedly, i thought there is "HWADDR=xxx" in configuration file and it will distinguishes one adaptor from another.

So kernel / networking script just distinguish from the naming?

And why the sudden change?

No idea why would that happen. Check out 'dmesg|grep renamed' earlier it was em1 (because NIC is embedded/integrated), now for unknown reason its recognized as pci plugged device:

Code:
[root@server /]# dmesg|grep renamed
[ 15.182485] udev[395]: renamed network interface eth0 to p2p1
I'm not as far into Unix world yet to dive into searching why that happaned, I was lucky to troubleshoot it in time and put the server back into production.
