[B]Gnu Grub version 0.97 on boot; try to install Ubuntu Linux using a bootable USB[/B

I bought a new laptop Acer Aspire E1 which was having Linux Linpus preinstalled. I've never used Linux before so i didn't know it needs an OS as Fedora or Ubuntu and so on.
I opened the computer and it arrived to a dead moment: "The complete license terms can be found in the root directory
Please type "less/gpl" and less/copyright to view.
If the system does not get any action every 15 minutes, the system will auto shut down
[root localhost/#] " or something like that.
I didn't know what to do and my brother tried to install windows 7 OS but unsuccessfully. He tried to format the existing partitions, but this action stopped the installation process and, also he tried to delete those partitions but this action was unable.
After this failure, he tried with Windows XP OS, also unsuccessful, and much more it was written : "STOP STOP STOP this can damage to your computer " and that the installation has stopped in order not to damage the computer".
After, the window that has appeared before this 2 unsuccessful installation actions disappeared and the only thing that appears is:
"GNU GRUB version 0.97 (629k lower / 2436800k upper memory)
[Minimal Bash-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible comand completations. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible completions of a device/filename. ]
grub>
Possible commands are:background blocklist boot cat chainloader clear cmp color configfile debug displaypm displaymem embed find foreground fstest geometry halt help hide impsprobe initrd install ioprobe kernel lock makeactive map md5 crypt module modulenounzip pager partnew parttype password pause read reboot root rootnoverify savedefault serial setkey setup splashimage terminal terminfo test load testvbe unhide uppermem vbeprobeverbose"
I tried also to install Ubuntu Linux using a bootable USB Flash Drive on my laptop, but without result because it doesn't start to boot anything. I specify that I entered in BIOS and i changed the boot order. It appears the window with the text I typed above. What I should do in order to install Ubuntu or another OS ?
