*Help* linux uber newb....wmv playback and ati video driver issues
Hey, I extra new to linux. ive been having some problems with my ati video driver. i use KDe and it works fine, but the windows when first opened seem to glitch, like a scrambled scatter of colours, but only for an instant. any help?
- also, i added files backed up on CD from previous windows OS, videos are .wmv and cannot seem to get dragon or vlc to play video, but sound works and file plays. --i added sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras..........was told on another forum that would work, but not only didnt display video but also produced no sound,??? ---any help would be greatly appreciated! |
Go here: http://www.category5.tv/content/blogcategory/15/77/ go to the perfectbuntu section. Read what the script is about and what it does. If you're satisfied and want to use it, follow the instructions.

version conflicts?
i use ubuntu 32-bit(although have amd64 dual) w/ KDe. the link was for 64bit and not for KDe specifically. will this work for my system and what exactly might i expect from this package? thanks again.

Thank you very much for the help. Very helpful, yet Im still lost. gnome-terminal (window) or ctrl+alt+F1 and use that screen. i tried sudo ./perfectubuntu in both, with no success. command file not found? file's saved on desktop. PS - Kde wont propose conflicts?

originally ubuntu, friend added KDe,....im assuming. didnt start with kubuntu. if this isnt what u need to know, where might i find the info?

No that's fine, I was just making sure you are actually using a version of *buntu. Now that file you downloaded, I suspect you saved it to your desktop. I want you to right click the file, choose cut
then go to Places and click on Home Folder when the window opens up, right click on a blank space and paste the file there. Now go to Applications--> Accessories and click on Terminal. Now type: Code:
sudo ./perfectbuntu |
If you ever need to know what *buntu you are running (or someone asks you) in a terminal type:
Code:
lsb_release -a Code:
uname -a or uname -r |
LOL thank you! it started! so how come it didnt previously work when it was placed in desktop? i used gnome terminal, was that the problem as well? terminal was black rather than white. could i have also used ctrl alt f1, and sudo ./perfectbuntu there?...thanks again

It didn't work before because, when you start a terminal session it automatically starts up with you in your home folder. I could have just said type:
Code:
cd Desktop Quote:
Another tip, change your default download location in Firefox under Edit--> Preferences--> Main to your home folder. |
thank again so much, its doing its thing now. i wasnt sure what was good to install so i installed everything. would u mind if i added u to a friends list or contacts list, i have many questions and you're very helpful. im very new and confused, but windows has forced me to use another OS, and unfortunately its all very new to me. But either way, thank you for the help!
