Unhappy 'no carrier' suse 9.0, intel 536 modem

I'm having a few problems putting a suse 9.0 box together for a friend. I got a 536 modem as I had heard they are pretty reliable for linux but whenver I use kinternet it will drop out half way thru the dial-out ('no carrier').

I tried kppp as well and that did the same thing so I don't think it is the software. I had a look thru the kinternet conf files and couldn't see anyhing to extend the time taken to wait for a carrier.

I am sure I am very very stupid but please, be gentle :-)

It could be something to do with the line itself that makes ppp think that no connection is being made. My ansaphone service changes the phone tone when there's a message, and that actually confuses the Linux demand-dialler into thinking that there's a line fault.
