'link to application' bombs

I am running KDE.

After creating an icon to 'link to application', the link bombs. A new item opens in the bar at the bottom of my screen, and an hourglass spins like it's trying to open the application, but after about 30 seconds, it just goes away.

When I first did exactly the same thing for another user, the application *did* open.

I suspected a problem with permissions, but all relavent directories and files in /bin have 'root' for owner and group.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org.

Try opening a "konsole" and running from there the exact command you entered into the "link to application" link. Post back with what happens and anything that's outputted to the command line.

Good luck.

works now (?)

Thanks for the tip. I got the messages below. When I located the files and directories quoted, they were owned by root. I deleted all files and directores ... then the 'link to application' worked fine. Thanks again!

Now, can you tell me how dangerous or sloppy it was to do this? If it's OK, I'm going to do it also for the other users who need to run the application (Firefox) -- and yes, the other users have the same problem.
