xubuntu wired network laptop not seeing my ubuntu box

Hi,

I am running a linux box with ubuntu 7.10 - gutsy, and a laptop running xubuntu 7.10 - also, would you believe it, gutsy. And so I set up a wired
network between the two via a cable modem they both share.

I have installed vsftpd to do the file sharing and zeroconf avahi to provide the necessary services to configure and control the gig on both machines.

On my box avahi tells me that the xubuntu laptop is visible via ftp...
and read and write to it as well - which is excellent news as it means my plan was working.

However my xubuntu laptop seems to be hiding the means by which I can see, read and write to my box. This is a problem for me. I have pottered around with the shared folder application on xubuntu which seems to be happy with samba and nfs but couldn't set up the ftp share...

As you may have guessed, I am not exactly a network bod, but I can find out my IP addresses for both machines etc. Just knowing what to do with them is the thing, well it is on xubuntu.

Thank you very much for your time!

Any more information on the process used to set this up can be found in this brilliant tutorial...and its a superb way to do a very quick home network-

I took ubuntu off my laptop thinking that xubuntu would run faster (its an old laptop) but does it heck. I think that gnome was better than this! And it was a piece of cake to network them togther via ftp...Very odd...that xubuntu is slower than ubuntu. I have a friend who had the same experience. I thought he was daft until now.
