Hello, I was wondering how to make a LAN connection between Red Hat 9 and Windows XP. Once I have made this connection, I will bridge the my wireless connections and this connection on my XP box and be able to access the Internet on my Linux computer. I enabled an old LAN connections on my XP computer, and no matter what I do on Linux, it always says "Network Cable Unplugged". The RJ-45 plug on the Windows computer is onboard, and is on a Linksys EtherFast NIC with the Linux. First I tried doing DHCP, then manually assigned the IP addresses. Then I still had no luck. What am I doing wrong in this? I'm sorry if this is considered a newbie quesiton.
As DoubleOTeC has mentioned u r either going to need a crossover cable or hub, router or somesort of connection from your winxp box to your linux box. You cannot access your LAN between the two machines without some type of physical connection
Please fellows I have nearly the same problem. My Internet server is win xp and my linux system is on a lan with a 10/100mbps switch. I have tried nearly everything to make my linux system browse the net on my lan. meanwhile the other systems are browsing well, they are all windows. infact i also have win xp on another hard drive in the same system. it is dual boot, with grub. so, my prob now is to make the redhat 9 to browse on the lan. i have tried static ip, dhcp, whatever. pls what am i doing wrong? also my lan has a phone gateway on it, i do not know if this is the problem. i have also installed another lan card on my system, realtek. the onboard browses on win xp, but never on linux so i changed it and it is also browsing on win xp. pls help. thanks guys.
Are you using Windows' Internet connection sharing(ICS) or are you running some sort of 3rd party proxy server on your WinXP machine...?
Sharing internet for the linux box, should merely be a matter of setting and IP (if one not automatically given) and setting the nameserver to the IP of the machine which is your server. (/etc/resolv.conf)
