XP/Mandrake 9.2 Internet Connection Sharing problem
 

Hi. I've been reading all sorts of tutorials about internet connection sharing, but none of them seem to work, so I've decided to come here.

Forgive me for using my computer names, but I find it easier to referr to each machine that way.

Basically, I have Rei, a computer running Windows XP and my main computer, and Usagi, an ancient 120mhz computer running Mandrake 9.2. I want to use Usagi as a second internet workstation using a dial-up connection on Rei. Here is a basic diagram of the system:

INTERNET -- (Dial-up modem)--> REI [XP] --(Ethernet Crossover Cable) --> USAGI [MDK 9.2]

I've set up Rei to use the IP 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, while I've set up Usagi to use the IP 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1.

This is all good and fair, I've set up connection sharing on the dial-up connection on Rei, and in the Mandrake Control Centre MDK9.2 recognises when it's connected to the internet.

Here lies my problem: I cannot access web pages at all using either Konqueror or Mozilla since I keep getting timeout errors on port 80. I have no idea as to why this is happening since Usagi can actually access the internet via Rei. It just seems that Rei cannot forward html pages to Usagi.

So can anyone help me out on this please? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. one last thing. I can't seem to permanently change my hostname. When I edit the /etc/hosts file like so:

127.0.0.1 localhost usagi

it always reverts back to:

127.0.0.1 localhost

on reboot. The hostname section in the mandrake control panel doesn't seem to work either, it never changes the name from localhost. As for the Hostname <hostname> prompt, it only lasts until the reboot. The /etc/hostname file also does not exist. Does anyone know how to solve this too? Thanks.

in /etc/hosts
leave the local host as is
and add a new line with the new ip addy 192.168.0.2

for adding /etc/hostname
#gedit (or edit tool) /etc/hostname &
it will say there is no such file but still open ur editor add wotever u want to add and save and then it will be added to /etc


also check on winxp that ur firewall is set to medium

I am planning to have something kind of like that, having my computer with Gentoo connect via crossover to a laptop with a wireless card to my router:
{Gentoo}---Crossover Cable---{Laptop}---Wireless---{Router}---Internet

will it work?


P.S. This is a temp soloution until I have my wireless drivers installed!

Also, I have Kernel 2.4, should I first upgrade to Kernel 2.6 :Pengy: (Gentoo Linux)

DoddyUK, be sure you have a DNS nameserver lsited on your Mandy box, or you won't be able to surf website names. That's entered in /etc/resolv.conf , if you don't already know.

Okay, the hostname advice worked this time, it kept the name even after several reboots. Thanks for that.

Also, what exactly do I need to enter for the DNS nameserver? I can't enter an IP address since I'm on dial-up, and my IP changes every time I connect to the internet.

Call your ISP and ask them what the IP is of theirs. That's how pages resolve in the first place. :D

Usually, they will give you two, a primary and a secondary.

Ok, problem solved now. It turns out it was Keiro Firewall 4 on the XP machine that was stopping the connection. Thanks for your help anyway.

Okay, time to look for a new firewall... I hope XP's internal firewall will do for now...

u will prob be best putting up a separate post re ur prob so u will get some advice from people that know more about wireless networking :-)

Actually, the firewall will likely work, if you enable local sharing (doing this from memory). Or, you could try Seagate's. Its free for personal use still, isn't it?
