XP cannot joing Samba PDC

Hi all,

I've been struggling to get XP to join Samba 2.27 domain.
Here's where I am so far.

DNS is working; can ping HOST (local and from xp), internet works, etc
XP uses Linux for dns.
smbd and nmbd startup fine.
Used Webmin to setup shares on Samba.
Added users to Samba.
XP can ping and browse shares on Samba.

Added machine account to Samba
useradd -s /bin/false -d /dev/null xp01$
Smbpasswd -a -m xp01$

Did the registry changes on XP.
HKEYLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Netlogon/Parameters
requiresignorseal = 0
signsecurechannel = 0

Now at XP box, try to join domain. Get prompted for username and password with permissions to join domain. When entering 'root' and password, get error 'bad username or password'. I have tried other users, same result.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to upgrade to Samba 3.x - www.samba.org - also - before attempting this, did you add the root user to samba?

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yes, root is added to Samba (it appears in smbpasswd).

I'm just using the Samba 2.27 that came with Red Hat 9. I wasn't sure if upgrading to Samba 3 was the best way to go as it's fairly new. I don't want to use ADS, I have just a small network with 5 clients and want a little PDC (like NT would be) and file/print. You think 3 is the way to go?

Thanks again,
Brad
