Big time noobie here, trying to get my ethernet card to work. Linux redhat 9. Linux reads my card, but upon booting it fails to load, saying the device(driver) is missing, and therfore delaying intialization. I then go to the network, and the xircom pcmia is in the hardware. I rebuild the adapter, and then try to activate. It waits forever, and then says IP failure.
My knowledge is limited... I don;t even know how to install updated drivers. I found a "self running" driver, but the extracts these files I can do nothing with.
I'm guessing I need to update my driver. Does that sound correct? How do I know? Is there something else simple to do that I just don't know/understand?
Any help would be great.. I'm very new to Linux, so I'm kinda stumbling in the dark.
Also, any advice on trying to install a blittz/netwave wireless card? Is it even possible?
First of all you should have posted what ethernet card your trying to use.
Second, what drivers your trying to use.
But, what's probably wrong is that the kernel in redhat doesnt have the driver for your card compiled. If you were to recompile the kernel sources, being careful to include your card, it would probably work.
Otherwise you could try Suse or Mandrake linux, which usualy have just about everything compiled and work better on many laptops.
I installed the driver, .install, and did not get any indication it was successful. Maybe it saw one LAN and stopped so I disabled the on board LAN and removed eth0 at boot up and tried again. No luck.
The driver seems to be a ADMtek driver. I checked their website for an updated driver. No luck. I'd install manually, but have < 2 days using Linux..... No clue how to do this.
I there an ABC website for Linux? A tutorial of some type?
Can I compile these into the kernel? Very new to this and looking for help.
Trying to use the Red Hat 8.0 driver provided on http://www.iblitzz.com/ for the BWI605 does NOT work in Red Hat 9. The problem being that the ./install executable that is packaged in the download from the site checks for Red Hat 8.0.
Does anyone know a way around that check?
Or... does anyone know of any good third party drivers?
I am typing this message right now using a blitzz wireless PCMCIA card from RedHat 9.0
You have to downgrade your kernel in order to get the installer from iblitzz to work.
So grab a RedHat 8.0 CD (disc1) and do rpm -Uvh kernel-2.4.18-14 (I think).
You can still have both the old kernel and whatever kernel you currently have and choose between the two at boot time.
You need to reboot after installing the old kernel and make sure you select the old kernel to boot from. Then run the iblitzz installer.
NOTE!! Counter-intuitive, I could NOT get the cardbus driver to work, so choose PCI during the install. It will then automatically load the module and should work. You won't get a green link light like in windows. Also, you may want to put a piece of tape over the activity light, it gets annoying.
The linux driver does not work as well as the windows driver. I have noticed slower performance and occassional drops. It's not horrible, but is noticeable. I am assuming you are not doing any WEP. If you want to do WEP, be warned. I have noticed that WEP in linux performs worse than in windows and is somewhat difficult to get working.
Have you found an answer as to how to install a driver for pcmcia?
Have you found an answer as to how to install a driver for pcmcia? I also have a xircom card and don't know how to install it. It's a Credit Card, and I'm using Mandrake 2.4.21 on a Dell Inspiron 5100.
