xinetd: unrecognized service ??? Why??
Dear All

When I run command " service xinetd reload " as root user
I encounter below error:

xinetd: unrecognized service

What is wrong with my xinetd service?
Any hints for fixingthis problem?
BTW Mylinux is Fedora Core 4

Do you have a file /etc/init.d/xinetd?

Try chkconfig --list to list existing services..

I dont have /etc/init.d/xinetd

Do you have xinetd or inetd installed?

stewchcken 07-12-2005 11:48 PM

Will they(xinetd and inetd ) be installed automatically as default package?
or I need to special package to install them?

I guess xinetd belongs to system-services.... something like that.
but after I installed it, i still could not find /etc/init.d/xinetd file

Any hints?

Just a sideways question..
What are you trying to run with xinetd?
Most useful services run stand-alone, without xinetd to start them..

to peter_robb's question
Because some service doesnot belong to standard services, For example CVS server

BTW. If I know service or software already, How I know which rpm package contains it?
For example inetd belongs to the netkit-base***rpm
xinetd belongs to xinetd***rpm

Don't know FC exactly..
But on the distro website there will be a package listing and a search for "which package contains file xxx"
