One reason could be that M$ ain't allowing any modified xboxs' to connect live network. (installing linux is thought as mod)

answer to to problem relys on the way you installed Linux... is it "Software" prepared by the usb and MechAssault trick, or is it installed with mod chip on. on the first case there seems to be nothing to do, but if you have installed it with a mod chip, you can get around the problem by shutting the mod chip off. then the M$ should not see the linux and you will get connected, if you have remembered to pay the 50$/year fee for Live!

do you have any rules that log packets that get dropped - normally the last rule of the chain something like

$IPTABLES -A INPUT -j LOG --log-prefix " INPUT: "
$IPTABLES -A OUTPUT -j LOG --log-prefix " OUTPUT: "
$IPTABLES -A FORWARD -j LOG --log-prefix " FORWARD: "

as the last rules in you firewall (assuming you default policy is to DROP packets that don't match then this will give you a log full of rejected packets, quite handy for debugging (although it will generate a lot of log entries so you may want to disable it once you are finished testing).

you will probably have to post at least some of you firewall so that we can work this out but a few quick questions.

are you allowing everything from you local net to get out to the internet and only allowing things that are ESTABLISHED, RELATED back in?

you may also want to check out the Xbox connectivity FAQ particularly the info at the very bottom about what ports to have open.

I use xbconnect without any probs but i haven't tried xbox live so setting up those logging rules may be the best first step so we can see exactly what is getting thown away.
