.Xauthority error under vnc

Whenever I run vncserver, I get the following error message:

xauth: timeout in locking authority file /root/Xauthority

I get the timeout error msg when I started using RH Linux 9.

When I was using RH Linux 7.x there was no such error. I am using the same rpm file (tightvnc server 1.2.7-1)
from the tightvnc website

I am having the same problem with SSH.
