X forwarding over the internet?

Hi,

We tried out doing this and it works really slow. We are thinking about paying for a higher speed internet (3 MBit). Do you think it will work reasonably fast? Do you think it is feasible to do X forwarding over the internet or do people generally do that in their LANs? Is VNC faster (network wise) than just X? I notice (on their website) they employ stuff like jpeg compression and such. I'd like to hear as many experiences as possible!

Thank you,
Max

I prefer using VNC along with an ssh tunnel for encryption. The bonus is that any client can run the vnc client. I prefer tightvnc also.

i too use ssh for the encryption also to port and X forward.

usually i just forward a simple app or two over rather than an entire environment like kde or gnome since i tend to live at the CLI other than for email or webrowsing (reading/posting @ LQ ). i use the port forwards to rdesktop to a few XP/2003 systems. from broadband to broadband this works rather nicely, when i am on the road and connecting from my laptop via dialup it can be a bit sluggish but that is to be expected.

I would have to agree with Archite about the vnc since it is cross-platform capable.

You can try compressing the ssh data by using the -C switch like this when you log in:

Code:
ssh -C -l username host
This will give you a small improvement provided the computer at both ends of the connection are fairly speedy. I'm on broadband at home and log in to my linux box to run one app at a time; the connection has a small lag, but is definitely usable.
