wpa_supplicant with older network cards

Maybe I'm overlooking something or just dumb but if I have an older laptop that only supports WEP authentication, should I expect wpa_supplicant to make up for that?

Or is it time for a new network card?

I have old wireless pcmcia b cards that suffer from the same issue. Yes it is time to get a new network card.
The problem with these older cards is that they were built before wpa was even around.

So mechanically they are incapable of wpa.

wpa_supplicant cannot fix a hardware limitation.

Edit: Without some terminal readouts showing the wireless card chipset and manufacturer make and model. This is all just a best guess on my part from personal experience. With the information given in this thread.
