WLAN using IWLAGN drivers

Hi,

I'm running Debian on a Thinkpad W500. I installed the IWLAGN drivers for the Intel WLAN card (http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagn.

In KNetworkManager, wlan0 is shown, but does not allow connecting and also does not display available WLAN hosts.

Ifconfig tells me the WLAN is detected, but as you can see it doesn't send any packets:
Code:
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet Hardware Adresse 00:21:6a:19:0c:fe
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metrik:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

wmaster0 Link encap:UNSPEC Hardware Adresse 00-21-6A-19-0C-FE-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metrik:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
Trying to do a scan for hosts, I get this:
Code:
# iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results
So I tried connecting from the shell using iwconfig, but then it says:
Code:
# iwconfig wlan0 essid Hostname mode managed channel 7 nick mynick enc mypass
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.

Summary: IWLAGN drivers, Knetworkmanager shows WLAN but doesn't connect, shell scan shows no WLAN hosts, shell WLAN connect doesn't work because "device busy".

Any help appreciated

Hi,

Do you have the firmware installed for your wireless card?
I'm running CentOS 5.3 on my T61p and I had to install the firmware (d/l from intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloads) to /lib/firmware. The file is called iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode (for my intel4965).

Hope that helps.

Yes, the firmware has been installed by getting the IWLWIFI package.

Code:
# modinfo iwlagn
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.29-bpo.2-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlagn.ko
alias: iwl4965

Problem solved. The WLAN was switched off for the laptop (button at the front of the device).
