I bought this dongle on the above recommendation and as of yet not been able to connect. It doesn't work out of the box for me and I am at a loss as to what to do. Any help? (the cd did not help)
hi,the edimax dongle should work,it works perfectly ok for me using ubuntu 8.10. i assume that network security details have been entered and you have created a new wireless network.
On the download site, it says I was downloading 8.1 but upon investigating I apparently have 7.1? (at least this is what it says under 'help'in Ubuntu. How do I confirm the version? (this may be part of the problem) Also I thought that "out of the box" would mean I just plug it in and then it will search for available networks and then I can tell it which one. I am new at this and this new linux language is rather cryptic so far. Like...what do you mean that you are 'assuming I've entered the network security details'? I have got anything going yet. The dongle isn't even blinking or active in anyway. Such is the point that I thought this was supposed to work out of the box!
hi,i bet i know less than you, must admit as much as i love my ubuntu the lack of drivers for some hardware makes it very difficult for someone like me who is very lacking in computer knowledge. it would be so much easier to just go back full time to windows, but as it is i dual boot and just use windows for updating my tomtom sat nav and a few other things that if i knew what i was doing would probably not be a problem under linux.
assuming that you are now running 8.10 get your dongle attached and right click on the little black monitor in the top bar at the top of the screen and then you will probably need to enable wireless and insert you security key password...out of the box is a bit of a misnomer, you do have to do something to get it working but not anything technical, everything i know has really been hit and miss, but the edimax dongle ew7318ug does work perfectly with 8.10... i am using it now...good luck
