Wired Internet Connection Cannot be Established on Debian Etch
 

Hiya everyone. I just did a fresh install of debian etch, and for some reason my internet connection is not working. This same thing was happening on the Ubuntu install I tried. Debian says that the LAN card is installed, and even the network settings says that its activated and everything. But the network manager program (:scratch: ack, forget what it's called) says "No networking device found" or something similar to that. So, I cannot access the internet.


I am connecting through a router/gateway. Internet works for all other computers on the network. I am using static IP (YES! everything is entered 100% correctly). The LAN card is just integrated 10/100 realtek ethernet port. Also, the internet works on this computer on my Windows drive, just not on debian (or the ubuntu that I had on temporarily).

I had some similar issues. My problem however was related to a Windows driver (which I foolishly updated) for my Realtek Ethernet Adapter. The old driver worked fine in both Windows and Suse - never had an issue. But as soon as I updated my driver I would reboot from Windows into Suse and couldn't connect to anything. It was like the nic card didn't even exist.

I found out that the updated driver 'turned-off' (don't know how else to put it) the nic card after every windows shutdown. So if I did a warm boot back into Suse the Nic card was dead in the water. If I turned off the system and did a cold boot it would work fine again. The only solution I found was to reinstall the old driver in Windows.

I have no idea why this works this way. Why on earth does a Nic card need to be shutdown if windows is being shut down? Perhaps something to do with the whole "wake on Lan" thing... don't know. Stupid - imho.

o__O I don't know why mine is working now. I just turned my computer off for the night and when I woke up I enabled the lan wake option in my BIOS and now its working.
