Wired ethernet conection deminished on Debian Squeeze
Hello, I have a generic P4 desktop computer with Debian Squeeze. Since instalation my wired ethernet connection will slowely slow down and then quit when surfing the web. Sometimes it seems worse than othertimes. If it fails I usualy can get it to come back back up by going to Network Connections and clicking on "wired connection"and them just closing the window. It will work for a bit but the conection will inevitably quit in a short time again. Interstingly it seems mostly a problem with web browsers as doing upgrades, package instalations, using SMXI and things of this sort do not seem to be a problem. I have tried both Epiphany and the Squeeze default Iceweasel with identical results. Also when using Google Earth a similar situation occurs in about 2 minuits of use.
The same computer running Debian Lenny with Epiphany and WXP with the dreaded IE do not have this problem. Any direction to help me debug this issue appriciated. Thanks, Jon
Try disabling ipv6 in iceweasel. Open a blank tab and type this in the address bar:
about:config
If a warning comes up, click the "I'll be careful" button which will bring up the configuration entries. In the Filter field type in:
ipv6
which should take you to this configuration entry:
network.dns.disableIPv6
The default value is false. Right click on the entry and select "Toggle" to change this to true. Restart iceweasel and see if this helps. The fact that only browsers are affected indicates you may have a DNS problem. Disabling ipv6 can help if this is the case.
I did as directed. I am still having the same issues. I also went in to network connection properties and Ipv6 was set to ignore. I chaned it to automatic. Ipv4 was already set to automatic (DCHP). This did not help either. Is there a utility I can monitor what is haping as the problem occcurs? Thanks so much for the effort, Jon
upon starting computer this evening no ethernet is working at all. loged out and restarted gnome desktop and did several complete restarts with no prevail. Reluctantly booted up WXP and is ethernet working corectly. Any suggestions? Ethernet has never worked well ever on this instalation. I will change back the IPV6 to "ignore" as this was the last of the 2 changes I made. Any help welcome. Jon
It is on the motherboard.

I am using the Liquorix kernel 2.6.32-5-686 installed with SMXI but the problem has ben there since instalation of Squeeze with default kernel. Some aditional info
jon@DebSid:~$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.32-5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-30) (ben@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Wed Jan 12 04:01:41 UTC 2011

I deleted the curent configuration and created a new one in Network Conections. It now is back working (porly)as it has in the past. Still Google Earth diminishes quite quickly and finaly stahls. Trying to reply to Linux Questions I have times it quits and after several difrent web sites are visited using either Iceweasel or Epiphiany conection diminishes and quits. It does come back sometimes if I give it time. Thanks so far, Jon
