wired connection unavailability

hey everyone!
i have a question, please forgive the unnecessary details, i'm new, really new..
-i have windows xp on harddrive, and i've burned fedora 18(xfce) on a USB using win32diskimager
-when fedora booted up, it didn't recognized the ethernet connection at all.
-i use cablenet (lan). i think it's pppoe, not sure though
-i was having the same problem in XP couple of days ago, a red cross "X" icon, i fixed it when i changed the "speed & duplex" from "auto" to "10mbps full"
-but now, i'm having this connection problem in fedora, i also tried current linux mint(the mint was from a DVD a friend gave me),but same problem is recurring with mint as was with fedora 18. also,
-it appears that fedora wasn't playing songs as well, not sure though, maybe the drivers were missing, i have no clue. but mint was playing songs.
my ethernet adapter's "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet"
thanks everyone

EDIT/UPDATE:
used the live usb version of same fedora (18) but this time, KDE version, now, the red cross isn't there and it says it's connected, but i can't browse.
-i use a username and a password to connect to pppoe and enable browsing on windows xp.

NEW UPDATE:
it appears i might be able to make things work if i can get the connection speed from 100mb to 10mb (eth0 i think). but i can't do that, coz i'll need to install ethtool and mii tool right? and i can't do that coz i am using live version coz i'll have to reserve a partition for linux for which i don't have the space. can anyone help me from here?

If you are running a live system and do something like configure wifi that 'installs' things, those things are installed temporarily into the system RAM (memory) and not written to a disk anywhere. So long as you don't run out of memory you can install and test anything without messing up whatever hard drives are present.
